Tamara Loiselle, founder and CEO of Synergraze, unveiled a groundbreaking seaweed-based additive that reduces methane emissions from cattle by up to 85%. This U.S.-patented technology addresses the significant environmental challenge of methane, which contributes about 30% of global greenhouse gas emissions. Synergraze's innovation not only mitigates climate change but also boosts cattle producers' profitability by reducing feed costs, with an estimated $47 increase in profit per head.
In a panel discussion, Bob Lowe, a cattle rancher and current President of the Global Roundtable for Sustainable Beef and former president of the Canadian Cattle Association, emphasized the major financial impact of this technology for the industry. Gordon Planes, Chief of the T’Sou-ke Nation, highlighted additional social benefits, such as job creation in seaweed production and contributions to food security for Indigenous communities. Loiselle shared her journey, from initial funding challenges to accelerating progress with support from grants and government backing.
As Synergraze prepares for commercialization, market access remains a hurdle, particularly with ruminant nutritionists. However, the innovation’s potential to reduce methane emissions and improve the sustainability and profitability of beef production has positioned Synergraze as a global leader in agricultural innovation. This breakthrough offers a promising solution for both the environment and the agricultural industry.
