A Roadmap to Achieving Enhanced Methane Reductions Goals

This Tourmaline panel discussion at COP29 featured Tim Shaw from Tourmaline, Patrick McDonald, Assistant Deputy Minister of Air, Climate, and Clean Technology with the Government of Alberta, Scott Volk, Director of Emissions & Innovation at Tourmaline Oil Corp., and Jean-Francois Gauthier, Senior Vice President, Strategy at GHGSat Inc.

The conversation touched on issues including Alberta's progress on methane emission reductions, the province's regulatory framework, its incentive-based policy approach, and the role of innovation and technology.

"I think one of the awesome things about Alberta; I believe that most of the oil and gas companies are already on the path and trying to reduce methane emissions regardless of regulation," said Volk. "You can see that in the numbers."

Gauthier echoed that, noting that regulations are a part of the equation, but a lot of the operators that GHGSat works with are driven by doing the right thing.

"Operators are already wanting to apply technologies and start driving down emissions," he said.
